Genesis Counseling Service began in 1978 as an extension of the Biblical Counseling Department of the International School of Theology, located in beautiful Arrowhead Springs, California. The Counseling Department, being the largest program in numbers of students and faculty, needed a local facility in which to provide practical, hands-on training for aspiring professionals in this growing area. The offices were originally located at Arrowhead Springs and eventually moved to San Bernardino.
The counseling center was originally named simply, Counseling Services of the International School of Theology. The Center later spent two years as the Christian Development Center before a meeting with Dr. Bill Bright in 1986.
As the President of Campus Crusade for Christ, Dr. Bright called Dr. Walter Linn, who was Chairman of the Counseling Dept., and asked him to start a counseling ministry for Campus Crusade staff and the large public served by this worldwide organization. As a result of this meeting, Genesis was created as a subsidiary corporation of Campus Crusade for Christ and was incorporated as a non-profit entity in 1987: Genesis Counseling Services, Inc. The counselors at Genesis served the Crusade family as an unofficial Employee Assistance Program and developed seminars and lay counselor training in the larger community.
When Campus Crusade for Christ moved the international headquarters to Orlando, Florida, the formal level of involvement with that staff group began to lessen. At the same time however, Genesis was developing strong relationships with local churches as a referral source for pastors and with missionary organizations such as Mission Aviation Fellowship and other local ministries such as Forest Home Christian Camp.
Many of these churches and organizations began requesting that Genesis start a center in their community, resulting eventually in the creation of satellite offices in Ridgecrest and Victorville.
The formal and legal relationship with Campus Crusade was eventually ended and Gernesis has become a separate non-profit,a tax-exampt corporation.
In the time Genesis has served in the larger Inland Empire of Southern California, literally thousands of needy individuals, couples and families have been helped in the three locations.
Many of the pastors in the surrounding area think of Genesis as an extension of their church ministries and have created vouchers for their members to pay for counseling a Genesis.
The list of missionary organizations served by Genesis has also grown to a point where several of these worldwide ministries consistently bring their staff to Genesis during furloughs and for healing times of personal and family difficulties.
The staff at Genesis spend much time in speaking and training ministries at retreats and conferences as well as teaching overseas in classroom environments.
The local community has embraced Genesis as a referral source for educators, physicians, attorneys, inpatient treatment centers and other professional environments.
However, the largest referral base at Genesis has always been the thousands of clients who have personally been helped and have recommended Genesis to their friends and family.
