Possible Course Outlines
1. BIBLICAL COUNSELING FOUNDATIONS - The goal of this class is to describe and illustrate biblical foundations for the counseling process. The emphasis will be on developing an understanding of how these principles should be implemented in the context of the local church. Real-life case studies will be utilized to ensure practical application of the learning process.
2. THE PROCESS OF RESTORATION - The goal of this class will be to identify and discuss the five most common conflicts encountered on the way to restoration and recovery and how to help others get through the process.
3. ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT GROUPS - The role of small groups in the healing ministry of the local church will be the primary focus of this class. The viability of groups which provide a basis for accountability and support will be discussed along with the opportunity for each student to learn from first-hand experience by participating in a group setting.
4. INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING PROBLEMS - The primary goal of this class is to expose each student to different kinds of counseling problems which individuals might present. As a result of completing this class, the student should have a much better idea of how each specific difficulty develops, what to do in counseling, and when referral is needed.
5. MARRIAGE AND FAMILY COUNSELING PROBLEMS - In this class, the most common difficulties faced in a marital or family counseling relationship will be presented. Along with the opportunity to discuss the biblical implications of these difficulties, the student will gain more practical understanding of marriage and family counseling techniques.
6.COUNSELING INTERNSHIP- Scheduled on an Individual Basis
Students who would like to put in extra work to receive a LEVEL TWO LAY COUNSELING CERTIFICATE must fulfill an internship in lay counseling after completing the above courses. The goals of the internship are as follows:
1) To provide counseling opportunities in the context of the local church.
2) To receive supervision through individual or group interaction with pastoral staff, or another appointed supervisor.
3) To give the lay counseling intern an opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in class time at the practical level.
4) To ensure that each student will have the opportunity to grow in practical experience by requiring a certain number of hours be completed before the certificate is awarded.
